Addis Ababa - National Airways, one of the private airlines in Ethiopia, has bought five ERJ145 aircraft from an unnamed US company. Four aircraft have already arrived Addis Ababa, and the remaining one is expected to arrive in a few days.

National Airways is providing charter flights since 2009. The company is now willing to launch scheduled flights on domestic and regional routes. Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) has accepted the airline’s demand to operate domestic scheduled flights, says the company.

In principle we have permitted them to operate scheduled domestic flight services. But we are still working on the details,
ECAA said.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, The ECAA has prepared a new aviation policy proposing to lift the seat limitation and guarantee local private airlines to serve scheduled flights, among other things. In Ethiopia, private airlines are not allowed to operate aircraft more than 50 seats.

It has been more than two years since the draft policy has been submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval. But, it has not been endorsed yet.

National Airways' ERJ145s have a capacity of 50 seats.
