Madrid Airport wants to get rid of the ghost plane

Madrid - Madrid Barajas Airport wants to get rid of a McDonnell Douglas MD-87 that has been forsaken at the airport for nine years and whose owner is unknown. The 28-year-old aircraft is known as the ghost plane in the Spanish capital.

The MD-87 flew for Iberia for eighteen years and was sold to the small Spanish carrier Saicus Air in 2009. The former cargo operator intended to start passenger flights between Spain and Guinea-Bissau with the aircraft, but ceased operations in 2010 due to financial difficulties.

The MD-87 registered EC-KRV has been taking up valuable space at Madrid Barajas airport since then. The airport management now wants to get rid of the abandoned aircraft, but because an expropriation procedure has started, it cannot be disposed of.

The airport management has published a public notice to find out the owner of the idle MD-87. If nobody claims the plane, it will be auctioned, Spanish media reports.
