Airbus has officially announced the A321XLR program

Paris, France - Today, Airbus officially announced its long-awaited extra-long-range single-aisle jet. The European manufacturer launches the A321XLR program to complement its best-selling A321neo Family.

With the A321XLR, Airbus aims to meet a market need of serving longer routes with even more range with a single-aisle jet instead of a wide-body aircraft.

Airbus says the A321XLR will generate more value for the airlines with its 30% lower kerosene consumption per seat than the older generation aircraft in the single-aisle segment.

According to current plans, the airplane is expected to enter into service in 2023. Airbus A321XLR will be able to fly up to 4,700 nautical miles, which is 15% more than the A321LR.

Airbus's new long range narrow-body will allow airlines to add new long-haul routes to their networks such as India to Europe or China to Australia, which are not cost-effective to operate with a wide-body jet.

Non-stop transatlantic flights to the Americas will also be possible from more European cities. The aircraft will be fitted with the manufacturer's new Airspace cabin to offer passengers the best possible travel experience similar to that of a wide-body aircraft.

Unlike other A320neo family jets, the A321XLR will have permanent Rear Centre Tank (RCT) for more fuel, and a modified, more robust landing gear for its increased maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 101 tonnes besides its optimized wing trailing-edge flap configuration to maintain the same take-off performance and engine thrust as the current A321neo.

Airbus's A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle jet with around 6,500 orders from more than 100 customers across the globe.

Several airlines or their parent groups have already expressed their interest in the program, including AirAsia, American Airlines, Jetstar Airways, Indigo Partners, and International Airlines Group.

The European manufacturer launched the A320neo program in 2010 and added new variants to it over time.
