AMMAN, JORDAN — Royal Jordanian Airlines has indicated its intention to upgrade to Boeing 787 operations by acquiring two more variants of the aircraft. The airline's current 787 fleet, which consists of seven aircraft, is entirely made up of the smaller -8 model.

Previously, the carrier had disclosed its plans to expand its twinjet fleet. In its latest annual report, Royal Jordanian reaffirms its commitment to modernizing its fleet with 20 Airbus A320neos and 10 Embraer E2s. The airline's single-aisle fleet includes 15 A320-family jets and four Embraer 175s and 195s.

Royal Jordanian also states that it is "in talks" to increase the number of 787s and replace older ones. The airline anticipates concluding a lease agreement for three 787-9s in the coming days.

The carrier's full-year financial statement confirms an operating loss of JD58 million ($82 million) and a net loss of JD79 million for 2022, with its total liabilities exceeding its total assets by JD68 million.

While the airline believes the pandemic crisis "looks to be over" based on travel demand, it acknowledges the uncertainty caused by fluctuating oil prices.

Royal Jordanian is working to restore all operations affected by the pandemic and aims to add seven additional points to its network this year. The airline also seeks to serve transit traffic by improving the coordination of arriving and departing flights at its Amman hub.

The airline's network is set to feature 364 weekly services, primarily in the Middle East, but also including 20 to North America and 89 to Europe. Additionally, Royal Jordanian hopes to restart services to Damascus, Aleppo, Tripoli, and Benghazi in Syria and Libya "as soon as security conditions permit."
