The Miami-based company announced on March 24 that this agreement could extend to 23 weekly flights to five Cuban cities.
GlobalX's CEO, Ed Wegel, expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with Cubamax, stating that the partnership will offer essential air travel services to Cuban Americans and serve as a vital link for the Cuban population. Starting April 1, the contract is expected to generate an initial annual revenue of $12 million, which could potentially increase to $30 million when all five cities are included in the service.
Giraldo Acosta, Cubamax's chairman, praised GlobalX for swiftly becoming the premier charter airline for Cuba and expressed excitement over using their Airbus A320s and A321s for passenger flights. On February 21, GlobalX began operating bi-weekly cargo flights from Miami to Havana for Cubamax.
In February, the rapidly expanding carrier, which commenced operations in August 2021, was granted permission by the Federal Aviation Administration to start cargo flights within the US. By year-end, GlobalX aims to increase its fleet of A321 freighters to six aircraft. Despite operating charter flights with leased Airbus narrowbodies, the young carrier reported a loss of $4.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2022.
