MOSCOW, RUSSIA -- Russia's flag carrier Aeroflot has bought eight Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft from foreign lessors as part of the fulfillment of contractual obligations.The planes were transferred to the Russian register, and ownership certificates were issued in the Russian Federation for PJSC Aeroflot.
In late April, the airline's Board of Directors considered an early buyout of aircraft. After that, Aeroflot announced the upcoming routes with the A330 jets to the Maldives, Turkey, and Uzbekistan.
On April 8, the European Union adopted an amendment to sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, allowing leasing companies to sell their leased aircraft to Russian airlines, which were stranded in Russia.
The EU amendment covers planes leased to Russian airlines before Feb 26.
