Managing Director Thorvaldur Lúðvík Sigurjónsson says there is a significant tourist interest in the Nothern part of Iceland. in 2019, around 200,000 tourists came to Akureyri with cruise ships. Niceair aims to transport passengers to Akureyri with direct flights.
The airline will begin operations from June this summer with a chartered Airbus A319. Initially, there will be five to six flights a week to the UK, Denmark, and Spain.
"There are great opportunities in winter tourism, for example from the UK," says Þorvaldur Lúðvík.
Niceair also sees a lot of demand for international flights from Akureyri residents. Currently, residents of northern Iceland have to travel to Reykjavik Keflavik for an international flight, which is 400 km away from the city. Direct flights from Akureyri would thus be very attractive, Sigurjónsson says.
